Another round of bookmarks2024-01-23T00:00:00-00:00https://ohhelloana.blog/another-round-of-bookmarks/
I had not realised it had been 805 days since my last bookmarks roundup. 805 days. This section is still one of the most visited parts of my little web corner.

It's been so long that I have accumulated an intimidating number of bookmarks. On the other hand, I did go on maternity leave and stayed away from the tech world for a while. I started the draft for this post in May 2023, and here I am, on January 2024, finally sharing it. It's a good thing that for the past few weeks, people have been talking a bit more about their bookmarks, and because I want to move to a system of individual link sharing rather than bulk, I needed to get this batch out of the way.

This post will mostly include links from 2022 - things I bookmarked while on maternity leave. It's great to revisit these because I have no memories of that time.

I hope to get another batch of bookmarks from May 2023 out soon, and then I will move on to add them individually. I mentioned before somewhere in these posts, but adding them as a batch isn't working for me right now. I used to do it monthly, but if it is a month that I bookmark a lot, it will be a long post to curate. Right now, this format takes me at least one hour to create. I could switch to a weekly post but must integrate it into my routine. Maybe forcing a time slot every Friday morning or something. I also like the idea of individual link posts so that I can add tags and get back to them quickly.

I managed to write some blog posts since March but all those happened because I milked really hard the surge of energy I had at that moment.

Catching up on my bookmarks2021-03-06T13:00:00-00:00https://ohhelloana.blog/catching-up-on-my-bookmarks/
The thing about loss is that it just doesn't seem to end. It gets easier though. One day you wake you and you're feeling fine but one insignificant action somehow opens the gates for the sadness to creep in. And then that's it. The floodgates open and the tears come out.

If I thought the last months of 2020 were somewhat hard, January really proved me wrong. I do regret that I neglected my monthly bookmarks post. I've been wondering if I should start sharing the bookmarks individually like some folks do so that it doesn't pile up. I will think about it.

I'm sure I accidentally missed some bookmarks - a consequence of delaying sharing them. I hope that I can catch up on my missed bookmarks in my next post. It is also likely that I accidentally missed some posts from friends. Being online hasn't been a priority for me.

Take care friends.

Bookmarks from September and October2020-11-02T13:33:15.591-00:00https://ohhelloana.blog/bookmarks-from-september-and-october/
The whole September I was quite overwhelmed with work and life. I remember that in September "The Social Dilemma" came out. I don't remember a lot more weirdly.

In October I managed to take two weeks off! Visited the Isle of Wight for the first time to celebrate my birthday. Last week I took some time off to study for my "Life in the UK" exam. I also took an English exam. And I passed both!! Now I have the basics to begin the process to apply for British citizenship.

Time is still blur. Some days are particularly hard. It is what it is.

And now, in all honesty, my article was indeed the highlight of the month. Mostly because I struggled a lot with my mental health this past month. Maybe it is because I read a lot of unhappy things (my "others" section is nightmare fuel) but I can't help it. I can't just escape. Just a hopeless, powerless and anxious month. Hopefully this September I... feel better.

PS.: I am almost certain I missed some links here of awesome stuff friends did. I'm sorry... My brain isn't fully here recently.

July bookmarks2020-08-04T00:00:00-00:00https://ohhelloana.blog/july-2020-bookmarks/
I've been thinking about this bookmark page especially because styling wise it is incomplete and a bit ugly and one day someone will call me out. But that isn't the only thing I've been thinking about: all those days (almost all this year) when I thought that I've done nothing for myself or my career I like to come to my bookmarks page and scroll. The work in the links that I collect here wasn't done by me, but they were learned by me and that is progress and accomplishment. All these people contributed to expanding my views and to my growth. I'm proud of my small archive.

In today's age with today's resources there is no excuse not to educate yourself and see how we're in a racist society.

Follow the folks who talk about racial injustice. Think how the technology we're building is tracking and tracing everyone who is protesting. Learn about data regulations. Learn the tricks of the media.

Here's a couple of things I think everyone should see. However, I urge you all to please diversify the feeds you consume.

My last bookmark post was in July 2019 and that is quite telling of how things didn't go so well last year for me. At the time, I told myself that I would try to do a bookmark post every month and it all came crashing down around that time. It was in September that I think that I officially burned out. So actually, this will not be a very long collection: I wasn't browsing or reading much and I spent a lot of time offline.

When this month started I was very optimistic. I was full of energy and keen to get shit done. Now, I am overwhelmed with this sense of productivity shame. I have two blog posts that are still on my drafts, one side project and a lot of other tasks to do. Hopefully next month it will be better.

This month went by really quickly! It must have been the two bank holidays. And it was a busy month: I did three talks, helped organise a meet-up, attended some meet-ups too, work as usual and life! But I will explore this on another post sometime in the future. For now, this month's bookmarks.

April was an interesting month. This year hasn't been great for me because, for the first time, I really can't control my anxiety. Everything I can't control have been draining me in a way that I never experienced before. Those close to me know I've been struggling a lot daily and it sucks. This month I took nearly two weeks off from work and it made me realise how much anxiety I have on a normal day. While I was on holidays I barely used social media or the news and to no one's surprise, my anxiety went down by a lot. And guess what? I didn't miss out much on tech. Was a new shiny tech thing out? Cool, I will look at it when and if I need it.

But, this has all made me wonder: has the modern stack killed experimentation, and shipping bad ideas? Do weird experiments and fun ideas die on the floor, tangled in complexity, more often now? I'd hazard a guess that the answer is yes, and that you should probably skip that hipster framework—for now—as well. Just ship something instead.

Things that made me smile one way or another

I need to re-think this section. I really see and save a lot of memes per month on Instagram and TikTok. Not sure if all memes are worth sharing but I'd like this to be a "interesting/wholesome" section.

March bookmarks2019-04-02T00:00:00-00:00https://ohhelloana.blog/march-bookmarks/

This “bookmarking” format doesn’t seem to be working for me because of the way I am doing this. It also seems that I am bookmarking more and more things and I leave all the bookmarks to the last days of the month. I feel like I don’t have enough time to give them proper treatment. I want to share my favourite quotes and my opinions on them and this method seems rushed. I might go back to my original plan of doing them every two weeks.

I have also decided to split between tech and non-tech related articles because I feel that the amount should be the same (and it currently isn’t).

Also this month went by too quickly. Too quickly.

February was a complete write-off for me. It wasn't a good month but to my surprise I bookmarked a lot of things in the first two weeks of it. I also created an account in TikTok as if I don't waste enough time already looking at memes.

Bookmarks of 20182019-01-20T00:00:00-00:00https://ohhelloana.blog/bookmarks-of-2018/

A while back Twitter stopped allowing users to access all their likes unless they paid for it. This means that I have officially lost access to things I liked. Before they released their bookmark feature, I was using the "likes" feature as a bookmark to read later. I know it wasn't ideal and it was pretty lazy of me and it obviously backfired. I clearly haven't learnt my lessons and I started to use their bookmark feature instead of something else. If I learnt anything from this experience is that I shouldn't completely trust this free feature.

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, some people started to post their bookmarks on their website to save them forever. I like that idea but I wouldn't necessarly like to see the exact same implementation on my blog and social media accounts. In my old blogs I used to have "link packs" similar to what Swiss Miss has in their blog and I also enjoy newsletters that do the same. I like to have time to read things and leave my own comments and be in control of how it looks like in my blog.

Because of all this, I decided to do a clean up of my Twitter bookmarks. I know I have other bookmarks spread around my browser and slack and I will try to include those in this post too. From now on, I intend to do link packs every week or every two weeks and will add those to my bookmarks collection page (this page is a work in progress).

Between all these there were a lot of favourited tweets, codepens, videos, instagrams. So many. I know I missed quite a few bookmarks too. Hopefully by having a weekly or bi-weekly compilation I can be more granular and also share lots of content not related to web development.
